Okaloosa County is at the top of Florida bordering the Alabama state line and extending out to the Gulf of Mexico. Okaloosa became the 52^nd county in Florida in 1915 after a bill was introduced to the Florida House of Representatives that demanded a new county be created from portions of the two existing counties (at the time) of Santa Rosa and Walton.

Okaloosa was named after a steamboat that was largely responsible for transporting people and goods on the Blackwater River between Milton and Pensacola. The area depended upon fishing, lumber and turpentine as its primary income source. By the 1930s, the Military came to the county thanks to James E. Plew who donated more than 1000 acres to the U.S. Government for a bombing and gunnery range. LEARN MORE
