Alachua is home to the University of Florida in Gainesville and one of the state’s most popular college sports teams, the Florida Gators. Although a fire destroyed a large portion of Gainesville in 1851, it wasn’t until the 1970s when the town went ‘up in smoke’.

    The History of ‘Gainesville Green’

Gainesville has been infamous across the nation for its appreciation of recreational marijuana use and developed the nickname ‘Gainesville Green’ since the Vietnam War. Much of the credit for becoming a ‘pot’ town has been given to ‘anti-war veteran’ Scott Camil who began smoking marijuana during the Vietnam War and returned home to Gainesville in 1969 with a grudge against the United States Government and an inspiration to educate the local residents about ‘Mary Jane’.

Marijuana in Gainesville became so much of the culture that local farmers were even growing it; police officers were lenient on arrests for cannabis and hemp festivals were held in the downtown area drawing large crowds.

Eventually, Camil and other veterans working along with him (aka: the ‘Gainesville 8’) found themselves as defendants in several criminal cases, including a federal charge for conspiracy to disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach.

How Do Bonds Work to Get You Out of Jail?

When someone is arrested and taken to a county jail he is first fingerprinted, a mugshot is then taken and a statement is collected from the defendant. Afterwards, if the inmate is eligible, a magistrate judge determines a bond amount in exchange for the arrestee’s release while awaiting trial.

How Much Does a Bond Cost?

The amount of a bond demanded by the court is determined based on the type of crime the suspect has been accused of in addition to his prior criminal record. If paying a bond directly to the court clerk, the full bond amount is required. In order to be released for a lesser amount, a bail bondsman must be contacted.

How Much Does a Bail Bondsman Charge?

In Florida, a bail bond agent charges 10% of the full bond amount set by the court for a state bond. If the bond amount is $10,000 or more, most bail bondsmen will accept payment arrangements or collateral.

How to Bail Someone Out of Jail?

Anyone age 18 and over with a legal ID or official passport are allowed to bail someone out of jail in Florida. This person is referred to as the ‘indemnitor’ and is very much like a co-signer on a loan. The indemnitor is responsible for making sure the defendant appears for all required court hearings related to the arrest.
